Hi,

Must have been a couple of days of sunshine that gave me that last shove i needed to make a start on this bug.

Bought it last summer off Donald Harvey but couldn`t be arsed to do anything with it.

This was basically an abandoned project with some excellent work having already been done. Unfortunately there`s some less than excellent bits but nothing that can`t be fixed. All in all a very solid project.

The plan is a nut and bolt resto back to original.

Lets see where this takes us....

These bits are going to need to be re-done. Can anyone help me understand whats going on under the dash with that large patch? I can`t fathom out why this was necessary?

Chassis in pretty decent shape considering it`s age.

The floor pans are fine. A little fettling and body solder and they`ll be as good as new.

Hoping to get it shotblasted tomorrow.

So i have my first challenge.

As you can see this beam has been on the end of a few hours of "welding".

I`m not sure i can do anything with this in terms of looks.

Anyone know where i might pick up a good un-welded second hand beam?

Looks a solid project basis for a resto and quite original mate.

Could the dash chop job maybe be a drop down dvd screen opening for a stereo in the past?

Just seemed to be in a place where rust shouldn`t have got to.

Not to worry, i`ll try and dress it up as best i can.

Thanks for replies.

and some more.

Decided this poor chassis has had enough bodged floor pan repairs throughout it`s long long life and deserves a couple of new ones.

VWHeritage ones getting decent reviews. Anyone have any others?.

Last pics of the blasted chassis.

"Blasted" as in shot blasted, not as in getting personal with it. LOL

Time to dig out the spot weld drill....

Agree with Frank, its Wolfsburg west that are on Jojo's bug. I had to get mine in from Cali a few years ago and the difference in the thickness of the WW pans and the sniders is incredible. The WW pans are about 3 times thicker.

Sorry Rod,been running about like a headless chicken!!!! Yip as the boys say, they don't really get any better in either quality or fit. Autocraft or Heritage are probably the best bet, though i am waiting on a set for another bug from Autocraft at the moment and have been told another 4 weeks or so before they are back in stock.

Sorted. Thanks guys.

Next question is about a front beam. Any recommendations of what and where to buy.

Ideally id like to stick to standard.

I had a chat with Dave Campbell at the Strathallen show and he explained how the lhd and rhd version are identical with only a small mod require to convert lhd to rhd.

The problem is, im not quite sure which one it is on vwheritage site. It`s not very clear.

Volksfling is coming up at the weekend, id wait to see if you can pick up a beam there, in most cases original is better than the repro stuff but just need to make sure its solid. You are right in that they are easily converted from left to rhd
