Been a few months since i updated this thread.

Progress has been slow due to other commitments but still managed some hours here and there to push it in the right direction.

The floor panels were knackered so i replaced them.

First time i`ve ever done a beetle chassis and i really quite enjoyed doing the floor pans as they are about one of the easiest things to weld.

Once the floor pans were fitted, i put it back through the shot blaster to remove that black transport primer that can come back and haunt you months down the line.

It was then time to primer it....

We use an epoxy primer system which we also use to coat sub-sea engineered parts for a local company.

It`s good stuff and very durable. I just wish i was able to find of a way of econimically dipping chassis and shells in to it. LOL

Conclusion so far.

1. Chassis are easy to do
2. Shells are a PITA.
3. Undoing previous piss poor repairs are time consuming, frustrating, mind numbing expensive and a complete brain f***
4. If you think you`ve worked out how long it`ll take to do something, quadruple it. :)
5. Buy a beetle thats already been restored.

Decided not to coat the underside with any sort of stone chip or body shutz type of product and instread opted for an extra few coats of exoxy til i began to look a little bit "orange" peel.

I doubt this car will ever do heavy miles and if it does it`ll be during the dryer warmer months so i top coated it with Sikkens black 2k paint which dry quite hard.

Enjoyed welding and painting the chassis.

It was quite easy to do and rewarding on a daily basis.

The elephant in the room was/is the shell. It`s sitting there with a sarcastic look on it`s face waiting for it`s turn. CryLOL

Fitted some shiny new bits tp the chassis along with the sandblasted and painted gearbox.

Gators were a total ball ache to fit.

Thought i`d give this resto thread a wee update.

I ended up having to re-work and re-weld almost all of the previous owners welding.

This isn`t a slight on his work, some of it was actually quite good, however the rust had crept in between some of the welded joints and it would have been careless to assume a coat of primer would keep it away.

As the oven was busy, the beetle had to sit in primer for a few weeks and  i turned my attention to the engine with a view to cleaning it up a little.

I stripped the components off and shotblasted and painted each bit individually.

Lot of work but good fun.

I sand blasted all the tinware etc in the blast cabinet which is a godsend.

Gave the engine a gentle blast with bicarbonate of soda and then painted it with some high temp engine paint.

At this point i noticed a couple of the push rod tubes were badly damaged so i sent the engine down to Ed to replace them and check the engibe over (heads, compression, end float etc). It came back with a good report.

This let me carry on with refitting each engine component which is a serious time sink if you have never down it before.

The heat exchangers weren't "too" bad however the previous owner appears to have cut the mounting brackets off with a grinder meaning i had to fabricate some new ones and restore them.

Happy with the results.

So,

While i was arsing around with the easy bits and pieces, Gary (gazza on here) was finally able to give the shell a long over due coat of paint.

We carried out a full panel fit first....

And then lobbed the paint on....

and erm.... thought i'd just put this here as a collectors item..... LOL

Fabulous work Rod, what colour is the paint? Savanah beige? Looks beryl green but might just be the lights. Must be great having all those facilities at your disposal as well as the (hired) help
