Cheers Frank.

Having the bodyshop is the only way i can restore these projects without breaking the bank. If i had to pay others to do it for me i`m not sure if it would be worthwhile?.

I am able to grab an hour here and there and it makes a huge difference having the facilities to get these wee bits and pieces done fast before the motivation wears off.

Yeah it`s Savannah Beige. Wasn`t a huge fan of the colour before i painted it but it`s growing on me as each day passes.

Thanks for the comments. Wink

Big thanks to Ed for being on the end of the phone when i come up against problem after problem.

You have been a huge help mate and have a great way of drawing pictures with words on the phone. LOL

This bug had almost every nut and bolt stripped and thrown un-labelled in to boxes. As its my first (and last) ever beetle resto, i have absolutely zero knowledge in how they go together.

I am however, a total expert in getting them to the stage it is at now. LOL

i`m not exaggerating when i say every single nut, bolt, screw and clip has been replaced, repainted, reworked in some way shape or form.

The latest progress this week has been re-assembling the floor pan and all components ready for the engine going back on.

Just when i think i`m getting somewhere, the inevitable two steps back comes to haunt me.

Finally re-united the shell to the chassis but didn`t know that the engine and gearbox seal should ideally have been fitted first.

I just assumed it could have been fitted after. ConfusedOuch

So, gonna need to drop the engine back out.

No biggie, i`m now a f*cking expert at it. AngryCry

So while i waited for the new engine and gearbox seals to come from Machine 7 (Heritage and JK out of stock) i managed to blag a door card bracket which was preventing me from rebuiding the doors.

Ed has managed to source me a couple ClapStar

Had a chat with Ed a couple of months back about the quality of reproduction parts.

In 2007/2008 when i restored my Bay, i bought al my rubbers and window regulators etc from JK.

To say they were shite would be an understatement. I think they lasted about 18 months before i had to renew almost everything.

Ed suggested that i give JK another try as they have been actively improving the quality of their range and i must say i think they are far better quality now than the were 10 years ago.

Everything fitted really well with no drama with a far better feel of quality.

Time will tell i suppose.

You can get the engine seal in with the engine in place. It's a pain in the arse but it's possible :)

Frank its just standard bitumen based vibration/sound deadening we use on repaired trucks etc.

Takes that "tinny" rattle away when you clunk doors shut etc.

I think we buy it off Diverse Products, Glasgow.

Hi Frank,

Can`t say ive ever really had any odour issues with the bitumen based deadening pads.

They only ever give off gasses if they are heated to a high degree the way road tar does.

There is definitely a smell when i heat it on with the heat gun but completely odourless when cool.

We use it extensively on commercial vehicle repairs.

It will serve it purpose in a bug, ive got a panel van which, if we get hot weather, acts as an oven. Im unsure if putting sound deadening on cargo floor and shelf above engine but roof, doors, rear hatch and side panels will be getting treated to reduce some of the reverb. Whats your plans with the bug once its done? Are you aiming for Biggar?

Frank

I`ll drop a couple of sheets down to Ed over the weekend when i`m down.

Have a play with it and see what you think.

Bug won`t be ready for Biggar i don`t think. Everything i start on it, no matter how small or trivial turns in to a saga. LOL

Bought it just for a bit of fun but it's now in the way of me getting a good start on the split. ConfusedLOL

Some more progress over the past few weeks but slow as usual.

Every time i feel i`m getting somewhere i end up at a brick wall OuchLOL

Big thanks to Dave C for spotting that i hadn`t fitted the gearbox and engine seal. It was easy enough to drop the engine back out and put it in. Thanks mate.

The next stage, i felt, was to re-fit the wiring loom.

This was a difficult procedure as i have absolutely no real background on auto electrical wiring.

As the loom isn`t really that big, i felt i had to at least give it a go before calling for help.

There are endless youtube videos, web pages and diagrams on wiring but if theres even 1 small part not making sense, you go round and round in circles.

There are 3 main dash switches on the Bug. Lights, Hazard Switch and Wiper Motor. Then there are a further 3 on the steering wheel switch which are your indicators, horn and headlight main beam.

I found the ignition circuit very easy to work out and modify to use my new Ed supplied alternator but i wasn`t expecting the lighting circuit to be so tricky.

Basically they all connect through each other through 1 positive feed from the battery.

My good not 1 single spade connector was on it`s original connection.

I started off with the easy colours.

Nw i know it might not look like the most complicated wiring harness in the world but understanding how, where and why every wires goes to where it does in brain frying.

I`m waiting on a couple of components coming and then i`ll tidy up the dropped spagetti as best i can LOL

Now that the wiring is sorted out, i decided to put the wings on so i could complete the lighting circuit to right out to the bulbs.

I spent this afternoon putting the wings on and arsing about with the beading to get it sitting right.

At this point i decided to bolt the bonnet on as it would be safer.

Once it was lined up and bolted in to position and closing nicely on good gaps, i felt something wasn`t quite right.

In my box of endless bits i had noticed a fresh air intake box with twigs, leafs, dead flies etc stuck to the mesh.

Obviously this had been used and it had all the fitment holes etc were under the bonnet at the scuttle panel where it should be fitted.

The now glaringly obvious problem was that this bonnet had no vent/grille holes to allow air to pass down in the air intake box.

This bonnet that i lovingly repaired and painted is for a 1200 model Bug whereas the bonnet i need is for a 1300 model with air vents.

Here we f*cking go again. ClapClap

Well well well..... Photobucket seem to have priced their service sensibly now. ($2.99 per month)

Might actually get to update this resto thread after a year!.

After sourcing a vented bonnet, the next challenge was the roof lining.

Ricky Rae, a name that will be familiar to one or two on here, helped me out.
