Looking for some advice. We have a beautiful light turquoise metallic 1973 Beetle 1303s in the family-it was my Grandfather’s from new. It was fully restored about 30 years ago, but for one reason and another hasn’t been drivem for about 12/13 years. Despite being garaged, there is some rust coming through on the bonnet etc. We need to sell the car, and unsure whether to spend some money getting it restored, or to sell as is, as a project. It has about 80000 miles on the clock, amd the only modification has been the installation of a water pump for the screen washer. Any advice?

Am no expert, but if your not going to keep it maybe just get it running etc. And leave the restoration to someone else.As it unlikely you will recoup the cost of a restoration especially if the only thing that is not original and standard is the washer pump. Let someone else potentially plough money into it

I agree with malky. You could spend thousands restoring it and not get that back when you sell it. I would sell it as it is
Highly medicated for the safety of the masses

A running and driving beetle can double the initial project value.
In my experience - if a beetle has been laid up (and as long as not seized) it would be fairly easy to get started.
1303 beetles can rust more than standard Beetles so a strip down could reveal a horror story.

The only downside to selling a project 1303 is the current value of them and popularity is much less than a standard beetle.

1303s AT Code gearboxes are worth £400-£500
AS code 1600 twin port engine running is worth £500-£850 depending on condition.
possibly even more.

Best thing to do is get it running and driving, research the market for values and try not to add sentimental value on top.

hope this helps.

Is the rust cosmetic only?

Maybe more cost effective to get MOT’d and running , then a good clean and sell as is ?

Ps any pics ? :-)
